20th Anniversary Season!

Madrigal Evenings
Come gather around the piano to sing English and Italian madrigals (examples: The Silver Swan; Now is the Month of Maying). We’ll throw in some songs from our old Europa Cantat books as well. Ralph Nelson will play and conduct. We’ll learn 7-8 songs before we break for dessert; then we’ll come back and learn 5-6 more songs. Finally, we'll sing through some of our favorites one more time. All skill levels welcome!

Zimmermann’s Leipzig Coffeehouse
Come with us back in time, to Café Zimmermann! Here, many of Bach’s secular cantatas were performed for the first time. In 1723, it was the largest and best-appointed Kaffeehaus of Leipzig and a center for gentlemen and the middle classes. While women were forbidden from frequenting coffeehouses, they could attend public concerts at Zimmermann’s. In 1729, Bach began holding regular concerts there, consisting of German and Italian opera, chamber music, secular cantatas, and works for orchestra.
We’ll perform Bach’s Coffee Cantata (Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht) and Telemann’s The School Master (Der Schulmeister). Small groups will also perform fun music, while the audience enjoys coffee and German pastries.
